Those who have seen Harry Connick Jr. in ‘American Idol’ on DISH Network must have loved him. He was the mentor of top 5 contestants of the popular music reality show ‘American Idol’ for the Frank Sinatra week. Under his guidance the top 5 performed some memorable Sinatra songs quite beautifully. Let us a quick look at the songs which the contestants performed during the performance night this week -
- Aaron Kelly gave a heartwarming performance of “Fly me to the Moon”
- Casey James amused us all with his presentation of “Blue Skies”
- Crystal Bowersox sang a soulful “Summer Wind”
- Mike Lynche astonished us all with “The Way You Look Tonight”
- Lee DeWyze gave the best performance of the night with “That’s Life”
Lee DeWyze’s “That’s Life” received praise from the judges and the audience alike for his brilliant performance. But the best praise came from the mentor , Grammy and Emmy Award winner, Tony Award nominee and multi-platinum recording artist Harry Connick, Jr.
“I like Lee DeWyze a lot,” says Connick. In fact, he thinks Lee looks like a new and improved version of himself.( that’s a great encouragement for any contestant, I must say!)
Connick discarded the piano and chose a Hammond organ that gave Lee’s version of “That’s Life” a gospel-like blues feel. We loved it!!!
Want to look at what the judges has to say about this gem of a performance? Read on:
“Another great arrangement by a Louisiana boy,” says Randy. “You stayed your rocker self. I loved it. I loved it.”
Ellen said to Lee, “I think if this was the last night of the performance, you would have just won the whole thing.”
Simon thinks that Harry has finally brought the character and confidence in Lee. “You gave it a hundred and ten percent and I think it was, for all of us, by far, the best performance of the night.”
